Mecox Bay Dairy Farm
Located in Bridgehampton, New York, Mecox Bay Dairy is the only dairy farm on Long Island’s South Fork. They are family-owned and operated and are committed to producing high-quality, artisan products through sustainable farming practices.
Mecox Bay Dairy has a long history of generational farming, ethical farming, and respect for the land they farm on. The farm was established in 1875 by the Ludlow family, who continue to run operations today as a fifth-generation farming family.
A unique feature of Mecox Bay Dairy is that they only raise Jersey cows. These cows are known for being friendly and producing milk with higher fat and protein content. These characteristics result in richer, tastier milk, cheese, and other dairy products.
When it comes to their dairy products, Mecox Bay Dairy takes a handmade, artisan approach. All of their cheeses are made with raw milk, which is milk that has never been pasteurized. This allows the cheese to retain some of the vitamins, probiotics, and flavor that are lost during the pasteurization process. Some of the varieties of cheese they offer include Farmhouse Cheddar, Atlantic Mist, and Shawondasee.
Cow comfort and care are also important considerations for the Ludlow family. They are committed to providing the best possible care for their milking herd of more than 20 cows. They also raise heifer calves born on the farm and 10 beef cows per year. Their milking herd is primarily pasture-fed, eating hay in the winter, as is their beef herd!
