It Takes a Village at Venture Farms

At Venture Farms, located just a few miles south of Syracuse in central New York, hundreds of pounds of grade A raw milk are produced every day, showcasing the farm's commitment to quality and nutrition. Joel Riehlman, one of the passionate partners, sums it up perfectly: "Straight-up whole milk is one of the most nutritious items that you can consume as a human being." With an impressive output of over 100,000 pounds of milk daily, totaling more than 35 million pounds annually, Venture Farms is dedicated to bringing this nutritious staple to tables all across New York state.

The operation at Venture Farms is supported by a close-knit team of 14 full-time and several part-time employees who share a passion for dairy farming. Zoie Skinner, who began her journey in dairy farming at only eleven years old, and Jake Holtham, who has always been fascinated with cows and tractors, are key figures in maintaining the farm's high standards and productivity. Each day begins with the care and feeding of 1,250 mature animals and 740 young stock, ensuring their health and well-being are always prioritized.

Education and community involvement are fundamental aspects of the philosophy at Venture Farms. Joel believes in the importance of an informed consumer and encourages people to visit local dairy farms to learn about the process from cow to store. This commitment extends to the team members, many of whom, like Felix, started with no prior experience in dairy farming and have grown into skilled caretakers through hands-on learning and support from their colleagues.

New York State provides a fertile ground for farming operations at Venture Farms, offering an abundance of clean water, robust infrastructure, and a rich agricultural heritage. This ideal and supportive environment allows the farm to thrive and expand. The processing plant in Auburn, initially established in 2014, is currently undergoing expansion, promising to employ over 200 people and further contribute to the community’s economic health.

Community outreach is also integral to the mission at Venture Farms. For over 15 years, the farm has been actively involved with 4-H groups, teaching responsibility and farming skills to young students. Joel’s advice to those interested in agriculture is to engage with 4-H, FFA, or similar programs. Dairy farming's diverse and dynamic nature demands active work, making it an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys a good challenge. The team at Venture Farms views every day as an opportunity to improve and strive for excellence.
