The Tradition of Family Farming with Barbland & White Eagle Dairies
Barbland & White Eagle Dairies, located in the Finger Lakes region of New York, are home to 4,400 cows that produce over 40,000 gallons of milk every day. These farms work in tandem to provide high-quality dairy products while creating local jobs and supporting the rural economy. A significant portion of their milk is used to make yogurt within 150 miles of the farms, showcasing their dedication to keeping production local and fostering connections within the community.
The history of Barbland and White Eagle reflects decades of evolution in farming. Barbland Farms in Fabius transitioned to dairy farming in the late 1940s, while White Eagle began as a family dairy in the 1960s. Their 2019 merger pooled resources and expertise, combining generations of knowledge from two different farms, creating a unified operation that balances tradition with modern efficiency. This collaboration allowed them to streamline operations and focus on producing high-quality dairy while supporting nearly 90 employees and generating opportunities in industries that rely on and work alongside dairy farming.
Sustainability is central to everything they do. From caring for their cows to stewarding the land, their practices are designed to benefit future generations. Bret, a farm partner and livestock lead, is a fourth-generation farmer on both sides of his family. Keeping the farm thriving for future generations is something he values personally. The farm prioritizes the health of their animals, the well-being of their employees, and the long-term preservation of the environment. Their approach highlights the many facets of farming: producing food, protecting resources, building resilient systems, and strengthening the economy.
Beyond farming, their impact extends to education and career opportunities. Johanna, a farm partner and agriculture teacher, champions the wide range of career opportunities in agriculture through her FFA work at a local school. With over 300 careers in agriculture- spanning across science, technology, and management, farming demonstrates how agriculture offers something for everyone. Whether it’s the food on our plates, the clothes we wear, or the jobs that sustain our communities, the impact of farming is inescapable. Behind everything is a farming family that is passionate about what they do.
Barbland & White Eagle Dairies are not just milk producers but pillars of their community and stewards of New York’s agricultural heritage. Their story is one of collaboration, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the people, animals, and land. It’s a reminder that supporting farms like these sustains everyone- from those who consume farm-grown food to those who use products derived from farming- such as clothing, to the many people whose work is connected to farms, both directly and indirectly.
